I agree with Amanda, this is a greed issue. We are seeing more and more of our rights taken away and with that less choices. I think teeth are neglected more because of cost of taking them to a dentist than the lack of qualified people. I think a lot of people would take their horse to the dentist but because of price will just have the vet float them. Maybe if there were more equine dentists the price wouldn't be so high.

Great Article and well written
I don't go to the doctor when I need my teeth cleaned nor do I go to the Dentist with a cold. I think the issue is very simple, Teeth are grossly neglected on horses, I see a lot of horses with teeth problems that simple don't get the attention they need because of the lack of qualified people to work on them, or the cost of going to a vet to get it done. If there are qualified people who have a specialty such as dentists, help them get a Board of Registration or what ever they need to perform in their field. I belive it is a greed issue and that is really to bad for the animals involved.

Nice article Charmayne. I'm a vet limiting my practice to equine dentistry. Been floating since 1983 and over 45,000 floats.

This issue is not new. It was thoroughly discussed in 1996 in NY with no resolution by the NY state equine advisory committee. It was not the first time. In fact the first instance of vet v nonvet equine dentist debate that I know of was mid 1960's. Please contact me if you want more info. Thanks

I always love reading you blogs from the road because it truly gives a lot of insight of the struggles you guys have going on the road all the time and competing. You bring up a lot of struggles that you face & its definitely a revelation that running at that level is so much more than just having a fast horse that's trained well. It takes a lot of mental toughness and dedication and tenacity!

Hey Tana, Met you one time at Sperry and told you that I appreciated your voice speaking for the Lord. You told me its the least you could do, He's done so much for you. Get that tire fixed and back on the road asap. I will say a prayer for you. Your good attitude shows through as you blog about your tough time. Keep the FAITH!
